GA notified the International Cheer Union (ICU), the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the Australian Olympic Committee of this decision on January 17, 2018.

Existing Cheerleading members of GA-registered clubs will continue to be recognised for membership and insurance purposes until the end of 2018.

GA will continue to manage the logistics of the Australian Team selected to participate in the 2018 World CL Championships in Orlando, USA in April.

The responsibility for the identification of the entity to be recognised as the national governing body of the sport in Australia from 2019 onwards will sit with the ICU and the ASC.  Any entity looking to be recognised as the national governing body will need to satisfy criteria set by the ICU (http://cheerunion.org/membership/application/) and the ASC (https://www.ausport.gov.au/supporting/nso/asc_recognition).

While GA will not be a part of any future recognition process, GA will work with relevant stakeholders, including any new recognised body, to ensure a smooth transition process and to ensure clubs and athletes registered with GA will be looked after.

GA will chair a working group to oversee the exit process throughout 2018, with additional information for the Cheerleading community to be provided as appropriate.

The International Cheer Union (ICU) are seeking applications from judges interested in being on the panel for the World Cheerleading Championships and Junior World Cheerleading Championships.

Upon completing the form and including a photograph and CV/Resume, you will press “Submit” and an immediate image will appear – to confirm the ICU have received your application.

Their deadlines are earlier this year – Tuesday 16th January 2018!

Today marks Olympic Day – 23 June.

Originally started back in 1948, Olympic Day commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Games (23 June 1894). Pierre de Coubertin assembled 12 countries in Paris to meet and launch the first Modern Olympic Games to be held in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

The IOC President notes, “In our constantly evolving society today, Olympic Day is an excellent way to encourage all people to lead healthy and active lives and to promote the role of sport in society.”

The Olympic Charter says, “The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practising sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

The Australian Cheerleading Union looks forward to celebrating this day in future years to come with athletes, clubs and event providers, whether it be through sporting activities, meet-and-greets with high profile athletes, or Olympic-themed performances to celebrate Cheerleading in Australia and the Olympic movement.

The Team Australia Freestyle Cheer doubles team just returned home from the ICU World Cheerleading Championships, held from the 26th – 28th April in Florida, USA.

They were one team, competing amongst a quality field of 25, where only 9 countries were to progress to finals. Whilst other teams trained together over months for the event, the newly formed duo had just days, and yet incredibly finished with a 7th ranking at the end of competition!

Frances and Emily came together less than two weeks before departing for the USA, after Rachelle suffered an injury which saw her having to withdraw from the World Championships. Not giving up, even with the new addition Emily, suffering an injury and not being able to finish their rehearsal the day before the competition, the pom doubles team pulled off an amazing routine in the heats and again in the finals.

We hope they are very proud of their result and performance, as much as their club and the Australian Cheerleading Community are.

As Team Australia is a self-funded tour, the club has set up a go fund me page: www.gofundme.com/TeamAustralia to raise the large amount of funds required to travel overseas as a team. They have been arranging their own uniforms, organising travel plans, seeking sponsors, ensuring appropriate medical and health treatment, setting up fundraising and much more!

Unfortunately, the team had a setback last week, with Rachelle injuring her ankle. Thankfully, Emily will join Frances in forming the Doubles Cheer Freestyle team and the duo does not have to make a late withdrawal from the Championships.

The Australian Cheerleading Union wishes Rachelle well in her recovery and hopes all travelling members; Frances, Emily, Rachelle and Gezelle – one of Australia’s leading Pom coaches and choreographer, all the very best for a successful Championship.
