The Australian Cheerleading Union (ACU) was established on 7 July 2008 and is the recognised governing body of Cheerleading in Australia by the International Cheer Union (ICU) and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).
The ACU exists to serve the Australian cheer community and has three primary objectives:
- To help to grow and develop interest and participation in cheer throughout Australia
- To promote safety and safety education for cheer in Australia
- To represent Australia in international cheer competitions
Being recognised by the ICU therefore deems that the ACU is responsible for the selection of the national team and officials who will represent Australia in the 2017 International Cheer Union World Championships.
The ACU is an impartial governing body, managed by Gymnastics Australia and working in consultation with event providers and the cheerleading community. Gymnastics Australia staff manage the ACU and are professional personnel within the sporting industry with many years of experience. Gymnastics Australia was involved in the introduction of Trampolining into the Olympic Games and has sent Australian athletes to World Championships for the different sports that they govern for more than 50 years.
Gymnastics Australia as an organisation is presently working through the governance structure of the ACU and will be looking towards establishing management committees that will guide the ACU in all its activities. These management committees will come from a cross section of the cheerleading community which includes coaches, clubs, athletes and event providers.
Our aim is to get the very best coaches and athletes representing Australia at the International Cheer Union World Cheerleading Championships irrespective of State or Club basis.
